Role Overview
The Funeral Director / Embalmer at our Alamosa, Colorado location is responsible for providing skilled, dignified care in the preparation and service of every family we serve. This is a hands-on role for someone who takes genuine pride in their craft, brings compassion to every interaction, and understands that the care given behind the scenes is just as important as the care given in the arrangement room.

This is a standalone role focused on funeral direction and preparation, no location management responsibilities, allowing you to focus on what you do best: serving families with excellence.

Key Responsibilities
Care & Preparation

• Perform embalming and body preparation with precision and dignity, following all applicable protocols and the wishes of the family

• Ensure every decedent is handled respectfully and with proper identification maintained throughout

• Prepare remains for viewing, services, and final disposition in accordance with regulatory requirements

Funeral Direction & Family Care

• Meet with client families to guide arrangement conferences with professionalism and compassion

• Coordinate and direct funeral and memorial services from start to finish

• Serve as a calm, steady presence for families navigating one of the most difficult experiences of their lives

Compliance & Documentation

• Complete and maintain all required records, permits, and authorizations accurately and on time

• Follow all OSHA, state, and company safety and compliance standards rigorously

Facility & Team

• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the prep room and funeral home facilities

• Ensure all equipment is properly sanitized, operational, and maintained

• Collaborate with the broader team on scheduling, logistics, and service support

• Bring a team-first mindset and a positive, professional presence to every shift

Qualifications

• Colorado funeral director and/or embalmer license, license in a reciprocating state, or demonstrated ability to obtain Colorado licensure

• Graduation from an accredited mortuary science program, or currently enrolled

• Strong embalming and preparation skills; restorative art experience is a plus

• Genuine compassion for families and a deep respect for the dignity of the deceased

Archdiocese of Denver Mortuary is located in Wheat Ridge, Colorado on the grounds of Mt. Olivet Cemetery, which was consecrated in 1892 and is the largest cemetery in Colorado with 392 acres. St. Simeon Cemetery, located in Aurora, Colorado, was consecrated in 2004, and together these entities serve the Catholic Community of the Denver metro area, its parishes, missions, apostolates, and the general public regardless of religious affiliation. The mortuary itself was opened in 1981.

The position available is Embalmer – Decedent Care Team. Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, with a degree in Mortuary Science from an accredited school or university preferred. A current license, or the ability to obtain licensure in the state of practice, is required along with 1–3 years of relevant work experience. Applicants should have a positive and supportive attitude toward the Catholic Church and her teachings, knowledge of Catholic faith, rituals and traditions, and working knowledge of funeral services, ceremonies, and case management. They must understand embalming and cremation processes, equipment and procedures, as well as mortuary laws and compliance requirements. Candidates should be able to work independently, use technology proficiently, communicate effectively, and possess compassion, integrity, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. A valid Colorado driver’s license is required. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and move 75–100 lbs., push and pull up to 300 lbs. with a cart, stand or sit for long periods, operate office equipment, and use appropriate PPE when preparing for embalming and cremation.

Job duties include receiving and preparing decedents for final disposition with care and dignity, assisting families in alignment with Catholic faith traditions, verifying identity and documenting personal property, handling caskets and containers, performing case analysis and embalming documentation, and carrying out restorative procedures when applicable. Additional responsibilities involve handling hazardous materials safely, performing administrative tasks such as verifying information and completing forms, maintaining case management boards, overseeing prep room and crematory inventory, cleaning and maintenance, monitoring emissions for compliance, communicating with staff and external contacts, inspecting products, and complying with federal and state regulations. Other duties may be assigned by management.

Candidate Prerequisites
Educational, Licensure and Skill Requirements A two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or job specific skills acquired through on-the-job training or apprenticeship program. Valid Funeral Directors’ and Embalmer License in Colorado or the ability to reciprocate license. A minimum of five years of similar or related experience. Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels including management, associates, home office and families. Passing of both sections of the National Board Exam (NBE) as per state requirements. Possess a valid Drivers’ License and meet the driving performance standards as determined by management. MVR’s may be reviewed annually for compliance, and any conviction or at-fault accidents should be immediately reported to management.

Desired Skills
Essential Physical Abilities Ability to tolerate exposure to hazardous substances subject to government requirements; occasional lifting, pushing and pulling, with assistance, of objects up to approximately 600 pounds; manual dexterity required for clerical tasks; occasional stooping, bending, pushing, pulling and carrying objects weighing up to approximately 30 pounds for short distances. Ability to travel by standard methods of transportation. Must be capable of communicating with management and supervised employees.

Job Duties

The role involves supervising and scheduling staff for funeral arrangements and services, counseling families, and arranging funerals according to their wishes. Community engagement is essential, including conducting outreach activities, presentations, event participation, and involvement in civic and funeral service organizations.

Additional duties include recruiting and interviewing new associates, implementing advertising and public relations programs, and treating all decedents with respect and dignity. The position requires managing resources for maximum cost efficiency, utilizing information systems and technology, and evaluating location performance to implement corrective actions when needed. Financial responsibilities include overseeing accounts receivable collection and monitoring competitive market conditions to identify growth opportunities.

The role also encompasses managing selection room presentations and funeral products, coordinating new employee orientation and ongoing training, and overseeing facility and grounds maintenance. Daily responsibilities include conducting regular staff meetings, providing performance coaching to associates, staying current on company policies and procedures, and maintaining clean and orderly facilities and grounds.
